Il y a quelques annes, je me liai intimement avec un M. William Legrand. Il tait d'une ancienne famille protestante, et jadis il avait t riche; mais une srie de malheurs l'avait rduit la misre. Pour viter l'humiliation de ses dsastres, il quitta la Nouvelle-Orlans, la ville de ses aeux, et tablit sa demeure dans l'le de Sullivan, prs Charleston, dans la Caroline du Sud. Cette le est des plus singulires. Elle n'est gure compose que de sable de mer et a environ trois milles de long. En largeur, elle n'a jamais plus d'un quart de mille. Elle est spare du continent par une crique peine visible, qui filtre travers une masse de roseaux et de vase, rendez-vous habituel des poules d'eau. La vgtation, comme on peut le supposer, est pauvre, ou, pour ainsi dire, naine. On n'y trouve pas d'arbres d'une certaine dimension. Vers l'extrmit occidentale, l'endroit o s'lvent le fort Moultrie et quelques misrables btisses de bois habites pendant l't par les gens qui fuient les poussires et les fivres de Charleston, on rencontre, il est vrai, le palmier nain stigre; mais toute l'le, l'exception de ce point occidental et d'un espace triste et blanchtre qui borde la mer, est couverte d'paisses broussailles de myrte odorifrant, si estim par les horticulteurs anglais.
