Der vorliegende Text wurde anhand der Buchausgabe so weit wie mglich originalgetreu wiedergegeben. Typographische Fehler wurden stillschweigend korrigiert. Ungewhnliche und altertmliche Schreibweisen bleiben gegenber dem Original unverndert. Fremdsprachliche Ausdrcke (auch Orts- und Personennamen) wurden weder korrigiert noch vereinheitlicht, sofern der Sinn des Texts dadurch nicht verflscht wrde. Das Inhaltsverzeichnis wurde der bersichtlichkeit halber vom Bearbeiter hinzugefgt; Funoten wurden an das Ende der jeweiligen Briefe versetzt. Im Original erscheint der Brief vom 21. Februar 1882 vor demjenigen, der auf den 17. Februar 1882 datiert wurde. Die Reihenfolge der Buchausgabe wurde gleichwohl beibehalten. Das Original wurde in Frakturschrift gesetzt. Passagen in Antiquaschrift werden im vorliegenden Text kursiv dargestellt. Abhngig von der im jeweiligen Lesegert installierten Schriftart knnen die im Original gesperrt gedruckten Passagen gesperrt, in serifenloser Schrift, oder aber sowohl serifenlos als auch gesperrt erscheinen. Fazenda bedeutet Pflanzung. Es thut mir leid, da es nicht Hacienda heit, da Ihr das wahrscheinlich bis jetzt geglaubt habt, und ich Euch also gleich beim ersten Worte meines ersten Briefes enttuschen mu. Ihr knnt Euch aber mit mir trsten, es ging mir ebenso, und es war doch so hbsch, als wir noch so unschuldig Spanisch und Portugiesisch verwechselten.
