About the Author
Yee-Melichar, Darlene: -

Darlene Yee-Melichar, EdD, FGSA, FAGHE, is professor and coordinator of gerontology at San Francisco State University (SF State) where she also serves as director of long-term care administration. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for her teaching excellence and service contributions to the campus, community, and profession. Dr. Yee-Melichar's research interests in healthy aging, long-term care administration, minority women's health, and safety research and education are reflected in the five books, 109 journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, and technical reports she has written, and the numerous professional and scholarly presentations she has made. She was active on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Advisory Committee for Research on Women's Health, NIH Review Committee for Research Enhancement Awards Program, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) special emphasis panels on Translating Research into Practice and Health Research Dissemination. She chaired the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office on Minority Health (OWH) Minority Women's Health Panel of Experts, served on the U.S. DHHS-Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Advisory Panel on Outreach and Education, and the U.S. DHHS-OWH Region IX Women's Health Advisory Council, cochaired the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics 2017 World Congress on Gerontology and Geriatrics Local Arrangements Committee and the Regional Health Equity Council for Region IX (RHEC IX). Dr. Yee-Melichar is a charter Fellow of the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education; Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America; Fellow of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Research Consortium; and member of Sigma Xi, the national research society. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, Journal of Health Education, and other peer-reviewed publications. She also serves on the board of directors for the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) and as an OMH Health Equity Mentor for the U.S. DHHS. She received her BA in biology from Barnard College, MS in gerontology from the College of New Rochelle, and MS and EdD in health education focusing on gerontology from Columbia University.

Flores, Cristina: -

Cristina M. Flores, PhD, RN, FGSA, has been a registered nurse for more than 30 years. Her nursing practice has included many aspects of the continuum of care such as home health care, assisted living communities, and the acute care hospital. She holds an MA in gerontology from San Francisco State University (SF State) and a PhD in nursing health policy from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). At present, she is the owner and licensee of three six-bed residential care facilities for the elderly in California, a lecturer in the gerontology program at SF State, and an adjunct professor for UCSF. She has published several journal articles, book chapters, and two books relative to long-term care administration and quality of care. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and was the recipient of the 2009 Kenji Murase Distinguished Alumni Award, School of Social Work, SF State.
