Brutalit tanto peggiore in quanto, al fine dell'inquisizione, si dovette dichiarare che non reggevano alla prova neppure gli indizj e i sospetti, pei quali era stato s lungamente carcerato; e in quanto agli altri detenuti non letterati si permetteva perfino di abbonarsi a gabinetti di lettura. In quella atroce solitudine, il Cant trov modo di farsi dell'inchiostro col fumo della candela, penna cogli steccadenti; e su carte straccie, dategli per altri usi, scrisse il presente romanzo.
