À l'issue de Marita, de la campagne des Balkans et de la victoire allemande en Grèce continentale, l'île de Crète, en tant que base de la RAF, constitue une grave menace pour le Reich, les champs pétrolifères de Ploesti seraient menacés par les bombardiers anglais. Décision est prise, le XI. Fliegerkorps est transféré en Grèce pour une opération aérotransportée pour préparer l'arrivée par mer des troupes terrestres. Les Fallschirmjäger sautent sur la Crète, le 20 mai 1941, en plusieurs vagues. La bataille sera acharnée et très coûteuse pour les paras qui perdront près de la moitié de leur effectif. Victoire coûteuse pour les Allemands mais aussi pour les Britanniques, qui perdent cette base et, à peu près autant d'hommes et laissent 12 000 prisonniers.
Le coeur de ce nouvel ouvrage est constitué par 150 photos remarquables et très rares, sur plus de 300 photos et 30 profils couleurs et cartes. Un récit détaillé des opérations, accompagné de témoignages fera de cet album richement illustré une référence essentielle sur une bataille devenue mythique.

With the conclusion of Marita, the Balkan campaign and the German victory in mainland Greece, the island of Crete, as an RAF base, poses a serious threat to the Reich, the oil fields of Ploesti would be threatened by British bombers. Decision is made, the XI. Fliegerkorps is transferred to Greece for an airborne operation to prepare for the arrival by sea of ground troops. The Fallschirmjäger jump on Crete, May 20, 1941, in several waves. The battle will be fierce and very costly for the paratroopers who will lose nearly half of their workforce. A costly victory for the Germans but also for the British, who lost this base and about as many men and left 12,000 prisoners.
The heart of this new book is made up of 150 remarkable and very rare photos, out of more than 300 photos and 30 color profiles and maps. A detailed account of the operations, accompanied by testimonies will make this richly illustrated album an essential reference on a battle that has become legendary.
