Dante trova Trajano fra l'anime beate che nel cielo di Giove ricevono premio e sono glorificate per avere amata ed amministrata la giustizia nel mondo[1]. Un imperatore non battezzato, fatto partecipe della felicit degli eletti, non certo la meno strana fra le immaginazioni e le favole di cui siamo venuti discorrendo sin qui, o discorreremo in seguito. La storia autentica nulla ricorda che faccia parer degno di tanta grazia Trajano; anzi narra di fatti che avrebbero dovuto renderne odiosa alla Chiesa la memoria in perpetuo; giacch egli fu persecutore dei cristiani, e in molte cronache del medio evo si fa espresso ricordo di ci, e, con certa alterazione di verit, si dice che dalle persecuzioni desistette pi tardi per consiglio e per intercessione di Plinio il Giovane[2]. Si [2] sa inoltre ch'egli fu dedito al vino un po' pi dell'onesto, e non rifugg da certi amori, in quel tempo non meno latini che greci. Di ci Dione Cassio non sembra fargli gran carico[3]; ma Gregorio Magno, se l'avesse saputo, l'avrebbe senz'alcun dubbio lasciato stare all'inferno, d'onde, secondoch la leggenda racconta, con perseverantissime preci gli venne fatto di trarlo.
