In his essay, Daniel Allentuck provides an accurate account of the context and circumstances in which Detachment "P" 163rd Signal Photographic Company worked, and clarifies the history of this image, supported by original documents.

About the Author
Manuela Fugenzi is a journalist, photo editor, curator and historian of photography, active in book and periodical publishing, and has curated numerous photographic exhibitions.
Her interests have long revolved around photography and memory, along with
historical and contemporary photojournalism. An advocate of the significance of photography, she teaches photography, placing particular emphasis on the links between iconography and contemporary society.
