La tragedia griega se ocupa ms directamente que la epopeya y la lrica en los problemas de la vida, en el misterio que rodea a la voluntad humana, en las leyes superiores que presiden nuestros destinos. Florece en el siglo V, antes de Cristo, y se deriv del ditirambo, coro en el culto de Dionisos (Baco), que se distingui por su exaltacin y violencia de sentimientos dolorosos. Los cantores simulaban ser stiros y dems entidades del cortejo de Dionisos, y se entregaban a apasionadas lamentaciones con motivo de los patticos episodios de la leyenda del dios.
