Le 18 mars 1867, j'arrivais Liverpool. Le Great Eastern devait partir quelques jours aprs pour New York, et je venais prendre passage son bord. Voyage d'amateur, rien de plus. Une traverse de l'Atlantique sur ce gigantesque bateau me tentait. Par occasion, je comptais visiter le North-Amrique, mais accessoirement. Le Great Eastern d'abord. Le pays clbr par Cooper ensuite. En effet, ce steamship est un chef-d'oeuvre de construction navale. C'est plus qu'un vaisseau, c'est une ville flottante, un morceau de comt, dtach du sol anglais, qui, aprs avoir travers la mer, va se souder au continent amricain. Je me figurais cette masse norme emporte sur les flots, sa lutte contre les vents qu'elle dfie, son audace devant la mer impuissante, son indiffrence la lame, sa stabilit au milieu de cet lment qui secoue comme des chaloupes les Warriors et les Solfrinos. Mais mon imagination s'tait arrte en de. Toutes ces choses, je les vis pendant cette traverse, et bien d'autres encore qui ne sont plus du Domaine maritime.
