Der Verfasser, der viele Jahre hindurch intellektuelle Sympathien mit einem bewussten, intellektuellen Konservatismus ausserte und die vermeintliche Diskurshoheit einer alt gewordenen Neuen Linken harsch kritisierte, formuliert eine entschiedene Absage an die neue Rechte. Er zeigt, dass ihre Berufung auf bedeutende Traditionen leer und zynisch ist und dass sie in einen uberwunden geglaubten Burgerkrieg zurucklenkt, der desastros enden muss. Subkutaner Antisemitismus oder auch nur mangelnde Sensibilitat machen die gegenwartige Rechte unwahlbar und letztlich indiskutabel. Das Buch ist eine einzigartige Verbindung von scharfer ideengeschichtlicher Analyse, autobiographischer Reminiszenz, Polemik und Essay. Die Perspektive zielt auf eine verantwortliche Zeitgenossenschaft, die, mit Walter Benjamin, ohne Gedachtnis nicht auskommt, wobei, dem Pladoyer des Autors zufolge, Erinnerung Trauer einschliesst. Nur so kann das bewahrt werden, was "Besitz fur alle Zeit" ist und was niemals nur aus einer, sich verschliessenden Tradition kommt, sondern aus der Vielfalt der Stimmen.
