Verso la strada, fiancheggiata dai viali di olmi che cingevano da ogni parte Torino, sorgeva la casa in cui abitavano la famiglia del principale ed alcuni dei primi capi-officina, de' quali due erano a parte, secondo una certa misura, nei guadagni dell'impresa. Attraversato un cortile, nel cui mezzo eravi uno strato di erba ed alcuni alberi che nella bella stagione rallegravan la vista col verde delle loro fronde, trovavasi il vasto, oblungo, affumicato casamento in cui erano le varie officine che tutto il giorno mandavano per gli alti camini il denso fumo del coke e per le numerose e larghe finestrone l'incessante rumore del lavoro. Alla destra di questo cortile stavano le rimesse ampie e ben costrutte, dove, insieme con i diversi carri necessari allo stabilimento pel trasporto delle merci, eranvi pure una modesta ma comoda carrozza per la famiglia, un elegante tilbury, che il ricco industriale aveva regalato al suo figliuolo avvocato, unico di maschi, ed una tromba idraulica, opportuna cautela pei casi d'incendio.
