Lady Susan es, probablemente, la primera novela seria que proyectó Jane Austen quien, hasta el momento, habí a escrito solamente parodias de las novelas de moda para que leyera su familia. Se supone que escribió esta novela breve antes de los veinte añ os aunque no fue publicada en vida de Jane, por lo que no disponemos de muchas precisiones sobre ella. Lo que sí sabemos es que esta pequeñ a joya de la bibliografí a de Austen es una novela epistolar, esto es, conocemos todo el contenido de la historia a travé s de una serie de cartas que los personajes se enví an unos y unas a otros y otras. La trama es sencilla, breve, pero condensa algunas de las problemá ticas que despué s aparecerá n en el resto de la novelí stica de Austen. Una viuda joven, la hermosa y seductora lady Susan Vernon, acuciada por una situació n econó mica desfavorable, acude a la casa de su familia (la familia de su esposo, en verdad), huyendo de un modesto escá ndalo amoroso que la tuvo por protagonista mientras se encontraba visitando a unos amigos. Ya a salvo de la mirada escrutadora del ojo pú blico, la coqueta lady Susan tendrá tiempo para conquistar algú n otro corazó n, al tiempo que lidia con su hija adolescente, Frederica, que no acepta la unió n conveniente que para ella tramó su madre.
