Une habitation pittoresque, pose au milieu du coteau qui domine la Loire et la Vienne, avait rsist aux ravages du temps et la manie destructive de lhomme. Forme primitivement des dbris dun chteau, modifie de sicle en sicle, elle tait irrgulire et charmante. Ses plus vieux pignons taient couverts jusquau fate dun lierre robuste qui soulevait les ardoises, dgradait les toits pointus, envahissait les chemines sans quon songet larrter dans sa course insolente. La partie plus moderne, construite au sicle dernier, faisait face une terrasse soutenue par danciens murs crnels, dont les airs altiers staient depuis longtemps bnvolement ensevelis sous les plantes qui saccrochaient aux vieilles pierres avec toute lextravagance dun esprit sans frein ni loi. De chaque ct dun perron aux larges marches un peu basses, un ancien propritaire avait plac triomphalement des lions taills dans la pierre molle du pays. Noircis par les annes, tout couverts de mousse et de lichen, ils semblaient prsider la succession des gnrations qui passaient, joyeuses ou tristes, devant leur impassibilit. Le parc tait contrastes, comme lhabitation. Un ct plant dormes, de platanes, de sycomores, avait laspect sduisant de la nature abandonne elle-mme. Mais, dans la partie qui entourait immdiatement le manoir, il y avait quelque cent cinquante ans que la plupart des arbres et des arbustes ne connaissaient plus les caprices de lindpendance.
