Croyant l'existence d'une mer libre au nord des continents, les navigateurs de l'Europe septentrionale cherchrent longtemps dans cette direction un passage conduisant aux Indes et en Chine. Partout ils trouvrent la route ferme, mais, loin d'tre dcourags par ces insuccs, ils n'en persistrent pas moins pendant longtemps dans leurs tentatives.
