J.\r\nCurrie for placing at my disposal his unpublished notes on the\r\nbirds of the Punjab.\nFull descriptions of all the Indian birds of which the doings\r\nare chronicled in this calendar are to be found in the four\r\nvolumes of the Fauna of British India devoted to birds;\r\npopular descriptions of the majority are given in my Indian\r\nBirds.\nTake nine-and-twenty sunny, bracing English May days, steal from\r\nMarch as many still, starry nights, to these add two rainy\r\nmornings and evenings, and the product will resemble a typical\r\nIndian January. This is the coolest month in the year, a month\r\nwhen the climate is invigorating and the sunshine temperate. But\r\neven in January the sun's rays have sufficient power to cause\r\nthe thermometer to register 70 in the shade at noon,\r\nsave on an occasional cloudy day.\nThe cold increases throughout the hours of darkness. In the\r\nPunjab hoar-frosts form daily; and in the milder United\r\nProvinces the temperature often falls sufficiently to allow of\r\nthe formation of thin sheets of ice. Towards dawn mists collect\r\nwhich are not dispersed until the sun has shone upon them for\r\nseveral hours.
