So ably were the whole negotiations\r\nconducted on the adverse side, both before [viii] and after\r\nthe war, by a few shrewd and determined minds; and so\r\neffectually was the war concluded by a Washington, that\r\nthe people of the old continent fancied the new one must\r\nbe covered by Statesmen and Warriors, and hailed the\r\napproaching amelioration of mankind from the bright\r\nexamples these were to send forth.\n'Tis true the subsequent conduct of the Republicans,\r\nboth to their leaders and towards ourselves, did not tend\r\nto keep up the admiration which had been raised; yet,\r\nother causesthe late events in Europe, having brought\r\ngovernments there into great difficulties, and multitudes\r\nof the people, from the intoxication of a short-lived prosperity,\r\neventually to drain the cups of privation and\r\npoverty, many of these naturally turned their attention to\r\nother countries; and leaving their own, sought on foreign\r\nshores those comforts they had lost at home.
