Paul Francis Gadd, born on 8th May 1944, Banbury, Oxfordshire, England, UK, known by the stage name Gary Glitter, is an former glam rock singer, songwriter and record producer, who was most popular during the early 1970s. He was best known for his extreme glam image of glitter suits, make-up and platform boots, and his energetic live performances. Gary sold over 20 million records, spending 180 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, having had 26 hit singles between 1972 and 1995, twelve of those reaching the Top 10, with 3 topping the charts, placing him in the Top 100 most successful artists in the UK. Glitter returned to public attention during 1997, being imprisoned for downloading child pornography in 1999 then for child sexual abuse and attempted rape during 2006 and 2015. Having performed under the name Paul Raven during the 1960s, he became famous as Gary Glitter in the glam rock era of the early 1970s, with a string of solo UK chart hits including "Rock and Roll, Parts 1 and 2", "Do You Wanna Touch Me", "I Love You Love Me Love", "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)", and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again". Having become one of the most prominent figures in British popular culture, a decline in the late 1970s was followed by a successful comeback as a solo artist again during the 1980s. Gary continued to record in the 1980s and 1990s, with his hit "Another Rock and Roll Christmas" of 1984, becoming one of the most played Christmas hits of all time. Glitter released 7 studio albums, and at least 15 compilation or live L.Ps. His recording of "Rock and Roll" was listed as one of the top 1,001 songs in music history during 1998, with the mostly instrumental "Rock and Roll, Part 2" having been played as a popular cheering song at American sporting events for several decades.
