Oliver, of Washington city, for valuable\r\nassistance rendered me.\nM.J.W.\nWashington, August, 1893.\nWinfield Scott was born at Laurel Branch, the estate of his father,\r\nfourteen miles from Petersburg, Dinwiddie County, Virginia, June 13,\r\n1786. His grandfather, James Scott, was a Scotchman of the Clan\r\nBuccleuch, and a follower of the Pretender to the throne of England,\r\nwho, escaping from the defeat at Culloden, made his way to Virginia in\r\n1746, where he settled. William, the son of this James, married Ann\r\nMason, a native of Dinwiddie County and a neighbor of the Scott\r\nfamily. Winfield Scott was the issue of this marriage. There were an\r\nelder {2}brother and two daughters. James Scott died at an early age,\r\nwhen Winfield was but six years old. William, the father of Winfield,\r\nwas a lieutenant and afterward captain in a Virginia company which\r\nserved in the Revolutionary army.
