It has been written to fill a decided demand\r\nfor a textbook that shall, without loss of time, directly apply well-recognized\r\nprinciples of general design to specific materials and\r\nproblems encountered in the Industrial Arts. A brief description of\r\nthe decorative processes adapted to the materials under discussion\r\nwith the design principles directly applying to these processes, insures\r\ndesigns that may be worked out in the studio or shop. It is hoped\r\nthat this provision will eliminate the large number of impractical\r\ndesigns that are frequently entirely unfitted to the technic of the craft.\r\nThis lack of mutual technical understanding between the teacher\r\nof design and the shop work instructor is the cause of friction that it\r\nis hoped will be removed by the methods advocated in these pages.\nThe Author's Motive. It has been the intention to reduce unrelated\r\nand abstract theories to a minimum and reach directly rules\r\nand conclusions that shall be applicable to typical materials in common\r\nuse in the schools and industries. The original conception\r\nmaterialized in the publication of a series of articles upon Design\r\nin the Industrial Arts Magazine, in 1915.
