By focusing on twelve remarkable women, the book delves into their contributions to Massachusetts and the broader nation, emphasizing their visibility and rights in a male-dominated society. These figures include religious dissidents like Anne Hutchinson, poets like Anne Bradstreet, captives like Mary Rowlandson and Phillis Wheatley, and revolutionaries like Deborah Sampson and Abigail Adams. Through their diverse roles--as writers, activists, and more--these women helped lay the foundation for the United States.

Author: Jim Cullen
Publisher: Globe Pequot Press
Published: 06/02/2026
Pages: 244
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.74lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.56d
ISBN: 9781493091645

Review Citation(s):
Booklist 05/01/2026

About the Author
Jim Cullen attended Tufts University and holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Brown University.
