She has received such honours as the Canadian Governeor General's award for Children's Literature and the TD Canada Children's Literature Award and her books have been included on the American Library Association's list of notable books. She is the recipient of the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence. For thirty years she worked as a librarian in public libraries, and she taught for seven years at The Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has a master's degree in children's literature from Simmons College in Boston. When not writing stories, she lectures on Canadian books and writes book reviews for The Hornbook.
