He passed his boyhood at Faridpur, where his\r\nfather, the late Babu Bhugwan Chunder Bose, a member of the\r\nthen Subordinate Executive Service was the Sub-Divisional\r\nOfficer; and it was there that he derived \"the power and strength\r\nthat nerved him to meet the shocks of life.\"1\nHis father was a fine product of the Western\r\nEducation in our country. Speaking of him, says Sir Jagadis \"My\r\nfather was one of the earliest to receive the impetus\r\ncharacteristic of the modern epoch as derived from the West. And\r\nin his case it came to pass that the stimulus evoked the latent\r\npotentialities of his race for evolving modes of expression\r\ndemanded by the period of transition in which he was placed. They\r\nfound expression in great constructive work, in the restoration\r\nof [Pg_002]quiet amidst disorder, in the\r\nearliest effort to spread education both among men and women, in\r\nquestions of social welfare, in industrial efforts, in the\r\nestablishment of people's bank and in the foundation of\r\nindustrial and technical schools.\"2 However, his effortslike most\r\npioneer effortsfailed. He became overpowered in the\r\nstruggle.
