In the following pages, this thesis is\nillustrated by a summary of the narratives of certain\nHeroes of Travel belonging to our own time; and I\nbelieve it will be found that for stirring scenes\nand hair-breadth escapes they vie with any which\nthe industrious Hakluyt, the quaint Purchas, or, coming down to a\nlater date, the multifarious Pinkerton has collected.\nHowever, on this point the reader has an opportunity of\nsatisfying himself, as, by way of contrast, I have prefixed to\nthese Episodes of Recent Travel a succinct p. viaccount of\nthe enterprise of Messer Marco Polo, the Pioneer of\nMedival Travellers.\nThere is no pleasanter mode of learning geography than by\nstudying the works of distinguished travellers; and therefore\nthis little book may claim to possess some slight educational\nvalue, while primarily intended to supply the young with\nattractive but not unwholesome reading. The narratives\nwhich it contains have been selected with a view to variety or\ninterest. They range over Mexico, Western Australia,\nCentral Africa, and Central Asia. They include the\nexperiences of the hunter, the war correspondent, and the\ngeographical explorer; and, in recognition of the graceful\ninfluence of women, of a lady traveller, who showed herself as\nresolute and courageous as any of the so-called hardier\nsex.
