All such undertakings\r\nhave more or less their independent value and\r\nmerit from the fact that each is apt to reflect and preserve\r\nthe special experiences and predilections of the\r\nimmediate author; and so it happens in the present case.\r\nA succession of Essays on the same subject is bound to\r\ntraverse the same ground, yet no two of them, perhaps,\r\nwork from the same seeing point, and there may be\r\nbeyond the topic substantially little in common between\r\nthem and the rest of the literature, which has steadily\r\naccumulated round this attractive and fruitful subject for\r\nbookman and artist.\nDuring a very long course of years I have had occasion\r\nto study books in all their branches, in almost all\r\ntongues, of almost all periods, personally and closely.\r\nNo early English volumes, while I have been on the\r\ntrack, have, if I could help it, escaped my scrutiny;\r\nand I have not let them pass from my hands without\r\nnoting every particular which seemed to me important\r\nand interesting in a historical, literary, biographical, and\r\nbibliographical respect.
