Yet stale as the assurance\r\nmay be, it is in this instance strictly true.\nIt was composed solely at the request, and for the amusement of, the\r\nchildren of a friend; nor would it ever have entered my head to offer\r\nany thing in the shape of a Fairy Tale to this enlightened age, when\r\nsuch productions have long been banished from all juvenile libraries.\r\nAmong the innumerable works which do so much credit to the talents and\r\ninvention of the writers, that have been substituted for them, it may\r\nadmit of a question, whether beings, not professedly ideal, are not\r\nsometimes pourtrayed nearly as imaginary as any that ever wielded wand,\r\nor worked a spell. I believe (for I have never happened to meet with\r\nthe book, since it was first published) I have the sanction of one of\r\nthe most celebrated female writers of the age, in her Thoughts on the\r\nEducation of a Young [iv]Princess, for supposing that the mind of a child\r\nis less likely to be misled by what is avowedly fictitious, than by\r\nthose high wrought characters of perfection, which they would have\r\nlittle better chance of meeting with in the world, than with the\r\nfantastic agents of Oberon.\nHowever true this may be, I certainly did not feel entitled to oppose\r\nmy sentiments to popular opinion; but the few friends, to whose\r\ninspection this trifle was submitted, pronounced it worthy of\r\npublication. I am aware, that it may be said, more partiality than\r\njudgment was evinced in this decision; but there was amongst the number,\r\none whose knowledge of the public taste cannot be disputed, and whose\r\nname, affixed as the publisher, may be considered as a passport in\r\nitself.
