He completed a B.A. in music and philosophy from Winona State College (now Winona State University) in 1972. He then returned to work on the family farm for nine years, during which time he helped convert the family farm to organic farming. During that time Francis became interested in spiritual writings, especially as related to agriculture, and began a regular practice of meditation. He then enrolled in graduate school and completed an M.S in soil science at the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in agronomy with a soil fertility specialty at the University of Illinois. Thereafter, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., serving as the National Program Leader for Soil Science for the USDA-Extension Service, where he worked on national programs in support of water quality and sustainable agriculture.Francis returned to farming in 1992, this time in Iowa, where he and his wife, Susan, owned and operated Radiance Dairy, an organic, grass-based dairy with on-farm dairy processing and local marketing of dairy products. Francis has been active in the organic and sustainable farming community, and has given many keynote and workshop presentations at conferences on organic and sustainable agriculture. Francis has served on committees, boards, and councils for many organizations and institutions, including serving on the National Organic Standards Board. He testified before U.S. Senate Agriculture Committees twice. In 2010 he authored the book A New Vision for Iowa Food and Agriculture. Francis has received many awards, including the Outstanding Organic Farmer of the Year award from the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Agriculture Services (MOSES), the Spencer Award for Sustainable Agriculture, from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Iowa State University, the Sustainable Agriculture Achievement Award, from the Practical Farmers of Iowa, and Steward of the Land Award, from the Iowa Sierra Club.Francis retired in 2024, and now lives in Winona, Minnesota.
