Who was Meister Arnt of Kalkar and Zwolle?
The first monographic exhibition on the founder of a rich carver school on the Lower Rhine takes the visitors into the era of the late Middle Ages. About 50 works by the artist, who worked between about 1460 and 1492, will be shown. The late Gothic oeuvre of Meister Arnt captivates by extraordinary liveliness, richness of subject and narrative joy.
Meister Arnt stands for the interconnection of artistic impulses of the Lower Rhine with those of the adjoining Netherlands: From about 1460-1484 he worked at the Lower Rhine in Kalkar and from about 1484-1492 in Zwolle, the present capital of the Dutch province Overijssel. His workshop supplied numerous places around the IJsselmeer and the region around Kleve.
In addition to altarpieces with figurative narrative reliefs, statues of saints and striking individual figures of Christ, Angels and the Mother of God with child are part of the surviving work of Meister Arnt. Despite the productivity of his workshop, Meister Arnt is largely unknown to a broader public until today - the exhibition in the Museum Schn tgen will merge a considerable part of his oeuvre especially for this exhibition and offers the chance of a (re) discovery of the sculptor.
