Thukydides syntyi Ateenassa v. 472 e.Kr. Hnen isns oli Ateenaan muuttanut Trakialainen, nimeltn Oloros; iti tunnetun Kimoonin sisar, Hegesipyle. Perheell oli sangen rikkaat kultakaivokset Trakiassa. Peloponneesolais-sodan aikana johti Thukydides Tasoksen vesill purjehtivan Ateenalaisen laivaston toista osaa, kun Brasidas ahdisti Amfipolista, jossa eripuraisuus vallitsi kaupunkilaisten kesken. Osa heist pyysi Thukydidesta apuun. Mutta kun hn laivastoineen saapui Amfipoliin vesille, oli tm kaupunki jo antautunut Lakedaimonilaisille.
