The Kooikerhondje is a small bred of Spaniel-type dog that originates from the Netherlands. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Kooiker, ' and by its literal English translation, the 'Little Cager Hound.' The breed was developed during the 16th century in its country of origin to be a tolling breed. The Kooikerhondje was primarily used to lure and drive ducks into 'koolen' (cage which are in the form of canals with traps at the end), so their owner, or the hunter, could easy catch them. The hunters who employed this duck hunting technique were known as the 'Kooikers, ' hence the breed being known as the 'Kooikerhondje' as 'hondje' means dog. The Kooikerhondje was also used on farmers to catch and exterminate vermin. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II as there was little need for the Kooikerhondje and breeding therefore stopped. The breed was officially recognized by the Dutch Kennel Club in 1971, and has since been imported to many other countries including Canada and the United States of America. The Kooikerhondje has a bright orange and white coat with a heavily plumed white tail, which the breed wags to entice ducks to follow it into the caged canals. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Kooikerhondje. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Kooikerhondje with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Kooikerhondje is known to be a good natured, quiet and well behaved breed of dog. The breed is also known to be intelligent, trainable and highly willing to please its owner. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Kooikerhondje has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Kooikerhondje has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. However the Kooikerhondje is known to be quiet and relaxed indoors if it has been properly exercised.
