He has frequently contributed to programmes including Newsbeat and Newsnight and is a fellow of Cardiff University, former fellow of the Open University, a fellow (and former officer) of both the Linnean Society and of the Institute of Biology. He was awarded a fellowship by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) and was recently presented with honorary fellowship of the Royal Microscopical Society. He is a life fellow of Cambridge Philosophical Society and President Emeritus of the Cambridge Society for the Application of Research.
