C'est pendant la Belle Époque, avant les voyages en avion ou la radio, à la veille d'une révolution photographique et cinématographique, que Burton Holmes (1870-1958) a commencé son long périple pour rapporter le monde chez lui.
Des Grands Boulevards de Paris à la Grande Muraille de Chine, de la construction du canal du Panama à l'éruption du Vésuve en 1906, Holmes prenait plaisir à trouver le plus beau chemin autour de la Terre , et présenter ses récits, ses photographies colorisées et ses films à travers les États-Unis devint son métier. C'est lui qui a trouvé inventé le mot travelogue (journal de voyage) en 1904 pour mettre en avant le caractère unique de son spectacle qui captivait le public avec des récits de deux heures rythmés par la projection de diapositives en verre peintes à la main et de quelques-unes des premières images animées .
Paris, Pékin, Dehli, Dubrovnik, Moscou, Manille, Djakarta, Jérusalem: Burton Holmes est passé partout. Il a visité tous les continents et presque tous les pays de la planète, réalisant plus de 30.000 photographies et 150.000 mètres de pellicule. About the Author
Caldwell, Genoa: - In the 1960s, Genoa Caldwell was the New York-based photo researcher for the London Sunday Times, as well as photo editor for both Black Star and Magnum. While operating her own photo agency in Los Angeles in the 1970s, Caldwell was introduced to the work of Burton Holmes and became private archivist for the extensive and unique photographic collection. Caldwell has maintained the collection for over 30 years and has lectured and published on the life and work of Burton Holmes.
