The disconcerting reappearance of fascism in many parts of the Western world since the late twentieth century has prompted a re-evaluation of previous political assumptions. The effort by fascist ideologists and groups to appropriate ecology for reactionary purposes has long historical roots in Germany, an aspect of the past that remains urgently relevant for the present.
From the contested history of the Third Reich to the ongoing attempts by far-right currents to modernize their appeal through the selective use of ecological themes, this book traces the surprising background and contemporary significance of reactionary varieties of ecology in Germany and elsewhere. The original chapters have been supplemented by an extensive epilogue exploring the historical and political implications of the ecofascist legacy.

About the Author
Biehl, Janet: - Janet Biehl (1953-) is an author, copy editor, and graphic artist living in Burlington, Vermont. In the late 1980s she was heavily involved with the Burlington Greens and the Left Green Network, and for more than two decades was involved with popularizing and developing the theory and politics of social ecology.Staudenmaier, Peter: - Peter Staudenmaier (1965-) professor of modern German history at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Peter's work as a historian focuses among other things on Nazism and Fascism, the history of racial thought, and the political history of environmentalism. He has also been an active participant in the anarchist movement, the green movement, and the cooperative movement in the United States and Germany for over two decades.
