El doble de Goliadkin representa sus frustraciones, sus anhelos y sus vicios, pero desatados y sin ning n pudor; se comporta como l nunca har a, por educaci n o imperativos morales o sociales: a veces con decisi n y firmeza, otras con subterfugios y trampas. Su criado Petrushka es testigo de su decadencia y su dualidad, representando la integridad de la clase baja ante los vaivenes sociales de una burocracia como la zarista, que estaba repleta de gentes sin escr pulos que manipulaban y conspiraban con el fin nico de medrar. El inmediato superior de Goliadkin, Andrei Filippovich, encarna el tipo de superior inflexible y vacuo que Dostoievski refleja en algunas otras novelas. Goliadkin, finalmente, se nos muestra como un hombre d bil, aquejado de una voluntad de superaci n que no es personal, sino impuesta por un sistema injusto, irregular y subyugante, que somete a los seres humanos bajo su dominio. Su enfermedad mental, su 'doble', no es m s que su lucha por sobrevivir dentro de ese voraz sistema, su m todo para conseguir m ritos sin renunciar a su personalidad. El final parece abocarnos a un mundo en el que esa lucha es f til.
