Les premiers navigateurs, involontairement ou non, ont couvert ce pays d'un voile mystrieux que la science et des relations frquentes n'ont pas encore entirement soulev. Le clbre Magals (Magellan) et son historien le chevalier Pigafetta, qui touchrent ces ctes en 1520, furent les premiers qui inventrent ces gants patagons si haut que les Europens atteignaient peine leur ceinture, ou grands de plus de neuf pieds et ressemblant des cyclopes. Ces fables, comme toutes les fables, ont t acceptes pour des vrits, et, au sicle dernier, devinrent le thme d'une trs-vive polmique, entre les savants. Aussi donna-t-on le nom de Patagons (grands pieds) aux habitants de cette terre qui s'tend du versant occidental des Andes l'ocan Atlantique. La Patagonie est arrose, dans toute sa longueur, par le Rio-Colorado au N., et le Rio-Ngro l'E.-S.-E. Ces deux fleuves, par les mandres de leurs cours, rompent agrablement l'uniformit du terrain aride, sec, sablonneux, o croissent seulement des buissons pineux, et dispensent la vie la vgtation non interrompue qui court le long de ses rives.
