--Ariel Dorfman, The New York Review of Books

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Political texts by the Alfaguara Novel Prize winner that put Colombia on the face of actuality.

Violence, power games, and post-truth in a country in search of peace.

"Where power is at stake, there will be lies."

Since peace negotiations with the FARC were announced in Colombia, Juan Gabriel Vásquez hasn't stopped addressing this process that has given his country so much hope--and has polarized it just as much. This book gathers everything Vásquez has written about the matter: his opinion pieces in the world media and conversations with former President Juan Manuel Santos, with the head of the Colombian negotiating team in Havana, Humberto de la Calle, and with sculptor Doris Salcedo.

The Peace Discord not only documents the events of the past ten years, but prompts a reflection on the lies and violence that have degraded national fellowship. This book includes an unpublished prologue and epilogue, in which Vásquez attempts to answer two questions: in the times of post-truth, how can someone practice opinion journalism? And in a post-conflict nation, how do you retell the past?

Through his journalism, Vásquez defended the negotiations before, same as he defends the accords now, but always with a lucid mind, far from any sectarism, from a position neither ideological nor solely political, but humanitarian and ethical.
