About the Author
Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) blev født i Thisted, og hans far var en velhavende købmand. Han rejste i 1863 til København for at tafe studentereksamen og læste herefter naturhistorie. I 1873 fik han en guldmedalje for en afhandling om alger. Samme år var han på dannelsesrejse i Italien men fik lungeturberkulose., hvilket endte med at blive hans dødsårsag. Store europæiske forfattere har været optaget af Jacobsens forfatterskab, bl.a. Rainer Maria Rilke, James Joyce og Stefan Zweig. Når man læser J.P. Jacobsen opdager man virkelig, hvad det danske sprog kan, og Jacobsen er derfor en forfatter, dansk litteratur har grund til at være endog meget stolt af. Georg Brandes introducerede forfatteren til europæisk naturalisme. Forfatterskabet har en central placering i perioden Det Moderne Gennembrug i dansk litteratur.
