For generations before the first settlers ventured into the North Carolina mountains, Native American tribes, primarily the Cherokee, made the Blue Ridge Mountains their home. The Cherokee have a deep and abiding respect for nature as is reflected in an old Cherokee proverb, "everything in nature is connected; if you harm one thing, you harm everything." The Cherokee belief in the interconnectedness of all things - land, sky, water, animals, and people - is the underlying theme of Sovereign Oak.

Sovereign Oak, a historical novel set in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina, tells the story of three historical events that took place in the Swannanoa Valley between the late 1700s and the late 1800s. These three short stories, which are based on actual events, lay the groundwork for the main story, a modern-day fictional tale of a couple who move to Asheville expecting to live quiet and uneventful lives in retirement ... until their past catches up with them and suddenly their lives are in danger. Will they be saved? And who ... or what ... might save them?

The French Broad River and the Swannanoa River have been integral throughout the history of Asheville and the Swannanoa Valley, and both play key roles in Sovereign Oak. On September 27, 2024, as Hurricane Helene slammed Western North Carolina with high winds and torrential rain, the French Broad and the Swannanoa rapidly transformed from tranquil to tumultuous and destroyed lives, homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure as they reached record flood stages. It will take many years and a lot of money and effort for this region to recover. Fifty percent of the profits from Sovereign Oak will go to recovery efforts to help the people who live in these beautiful mountains get back on their feet.
