Saluée dans le monde entier comme un monument littéraire, La Divine Comédie, achevée en 1321 par Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), est considérée par beaucoup comme la plus grande oeuvre jamais écrite en langue italienne. Le poème épique décrit le voyage de Dante à travers les Enfers, le Purgatoire et le Paradis, qui représente le parcours de l'âme en quête de rédemption.

Au cours des dernières années de sa vie, le poète et artiste romantique William Blake (1757-1827) produisit 102 illustrations pour le chef-d'oeuvre de Dante, à l'état de croquis au crayon ou d'aquarelles achevées. Comme le poème au long cours de Dante, les dessins de Blake passent des souffrances infernales à la lumière céleste, de l'humain horriblement défiguré à la forme physique la plus parfaite. S'il resta fidèle au texte, Blake aborda aussi certains thèmes centraux de l'oeuvre de Dante selon son propre point de vue.

Aujourd'hui, les illustrations de Blake, laissées dans des états d'avancement divers à sa mort, sont dispersées dans 7 institutions différentes. About the Author
Terzoli, Maria Antonietta: - After studying in Pavia, Bologna, and Geneva, Maria Antonietta Terzoli taught at the universities of Geneva and Zurich. Since 1991 she has been a professor at the University of Basel, where she is head of the department of Italian Studies. A philologist and interpreter of literary text, she specializes in Italian literature.Schütze, Sebastian: - Sebastian Schütze was a longtime research fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome. He is a member of the academic board of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples, and a member of the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften. From 2003 to 2009 he held the Bader Chair in Southern Baroque Art at Queen's University in Kingston. In 2009 he was appointed professor of early modern art history at Vienna University.
