Baada ya Vita Vikuu kumalizika 1918 Ujerumani iliachia miliki zake za nje, ikiwemo miliki yake ya Afrika Mashariki, kwa umoja wa mataifa makuu na mamlaka-shiriki (Principal Allied and Associated Powers) yaliyoshinda vita. Kutokana na mabadiliko hayo, Uingereza ilikubali wajibu wa kimataifa wa kusimamia sehemu kubwa ya miliki ya Kijerumani ya Afrika Mashariki; ambayo baadaye iliitwa Jimbo la Tanganyika (Tanganyika Territory); hadi hapo wenyeji wa Jimbo wagekuwa tayari kujisimamia wenyewe. Kwa miongo minne, Uingereza ilitekeleza wajibu huo kulingana na uwezo wake hadi Jimbo lilipojitawala Desemba 9, 1961.


Usultani wa Zanzibar, ambao pia ulikuwa chini ya Waingereza ingawa kwa utaratibu mwingine, ulijitawala Desemba 10, 1963. Mwezi mmoja baadaye, Januari 12, 1964, yalitokea mapinduzi ya kimbari nchini humo yaliyoiondoa madarakani serikali mpya kwa nguvu na kufuta taasisi ya kisiasa na kijamii ya usultani wa kikatiba. Zanzibar na Tanganyika ziliungana Aprili 26 mwaka huo na hivyo kuwa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania.


Lakini muungano huu siyo shwari, na misingi ya kiutawala iliyounda taifa jipya la Tanzania haikukidhi viwango vya kimataifa vinavyokubalika. Katika sehemu nne, kazi hii inajadili kilichojili tangu utawala wa kigeni hadi kujitawala na pia kutathmini njia taifa hili iliyochukua kuelekea mabadiliko ya kisiasa, kijamii, kiuchumi, kimaendeleo na kiutamaduni.
