Reservoir engineers benefit from a good understanding of reservoir simulation. While most engineers rely on commercial software packages for the calculations, it can be impossible to evaluate the validity of results without a solid foundation in the underlying principles. Basic Applied Reservoir Simulation provides comprehensive coverage of simulation. It begins with the fundamentals of numerical simulation, moving to field applications and more complex topics. Each chapter includes a project section that relates to the implementation of the topics discussed in that chapter. Includes 157 solved examples and 178 exercises.

About the Author
Ertekin, Turgay: - Turgay Ertekin is the Quentin E. and Louise L. Wood Fellow, Professor of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, and Associate Head of the Dept. of Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering at The Pennsylvania State U., where he has been a faculty member since 1978. He holds BS and MS degrees in petroleum engineering from the Middle East Technical U. in Ankara, Turkey, and a PhD degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering from The Pennsylvania State U. Ertekin has served on several SPE committees and was Executive Editor of SPE Formation Evaluation from 1992 to 1994. He received the Matthew J. and Anne C. Wilson Outstanding Teaching and Outstanding Service awards from The Pennsylvania State U. College of Earth and Mineral Sciences in 1982 and 1999, respectively. Ertekin is the recipient of the 1995 Pennsylvania State U. Graduate Faculty Teaching Award and the 1998 SPE Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award. He has authored or coauthored three books and numerous technical papers. His main research interest is in the area of mathematical modeling of fluid-flow dynamics in porous media.Abou-Kassem, Jamal H.: - Jamal H. Abou-Kassem is Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the UAE U. in the United Arab Emirates, where he has taught since 1993. Before joining the UAE U., he was an associate professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering at The Pennsylvania State U. from 1985 to 1992. Abou-Kassem held posts with the Research Inst. of KFUPM (1981 to 1984) in Saudi Arabia and Pan Canadian Petroleum Ltd. (1978 to 1979) in Canada. He holds a BE degree from Cairo U. and an MS degree from the U. of Alberta, both in petroleum engineering, and a PhD degree in reservoir simulation from the U. of Calgary. Abou-Kassem is a member of SPE and the author or coauthor of more than 25 technical journal articles in the areas of reservoir simulation, thermal and polymer EOR methods, fluid flow through porous media, fundamental properties of natural gas, and pressure-test analysis of fractured wells.King, Gregory R.: - Gregory R. King is the petroleum engineering adviser and reservoir engineer for the South Africa Business Unit of Chevron Overseas Petroleum Inc. He holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees, all in petroleum and natural gas engineering, from The Pennsylvania State U. He has worked for Chevron Geosciences Co., Houston, as a reservoir engineer in the Simulation Support Section; as a lead reservoir engineer of the Reservoir Engineering Section at Chevron Exploration and Production Services Co., Houston; as a lead/senior reservoir engineer of Chevron U.K. (CUK) Ltd.'s Reservoir Management Section in London; and as a senior reservoir engineer of the CUK Petroleum Engineering Dept. in Aberdeen. King has conducted simulation studies for long-term forecasts, reserve estimates, and field appraisals and has provided user support, maintenance, and enhancement for in-house simulators. He has authored or coauthored numerous technical articles, mainly in the areas of fluid flow in porous media and in simulation. In 1997, he was recognized by the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State U. as one of its Centennial Fellows.
