English summary: In May of 1941, the Cretan civilization offered heavy resistance against German attackers, which responded with mass-executions and the destruction of villages. There follows nearly two years of relative peace on the island, which was broken in the summer of 1942 and 1943 through the killing of hostages after the actions of British commando operations. After Italy changed sides in September 1943, the attacks of partisans were answered with brutal reprisals. In the summer of 1944, the activity of the partisans became spryer and the German leadership responded with shooting hundreds of civilians and, again, the destruction of villages. When the Red Army reached Romania, Hitler ordered the evacuation of Greece. In September 1944, most of the German soldiers had left Crete, on account of the general German retreat on all fronts; for a long time the island had been an eccentric outpost. An extensive amount of documentary material attests to the German occupation. There are also significant gaps but, for example, there remain the documents of the 22nd Infantry-Division, as well as the marines and a great deal from the staff of the commandant of Fortress Crete. Also, the officers of the British Special Operation Executive, which supported the resistance movement on Crete, left behind important material. A lively view into the lives of German soldiers on Crete is provided by the notebook and the letters of Captain Dr. Beutin. The investigations in Germany since the 1950s have led to no individual conviction but the extensive research materials, to which also countless Greek witness statements belong, are of great value. They allow for many experiences to be traced in detail.
