Coin guides available on Amazon are abundant and most of them are not viable. Unfortunately, people are taking advantage of Amazon's weak policies for self-publication. Amazon has no policy regarding titles, biographies, or editorials which means a person can make them up.

In the last couple of years, the number of people plagiarizing from the internet has reached new heights. Some of these people create information like the "wheat cent ended in 1956." As any astute collector would know, the wheat cent ended after 1958.

Some people are so dishonest they make up biographies and obtain a photo from internet sources. Other authors make up editorials and use sources illegally.

Every month more coin guides are added to Amazon. Most of these books are written by amateurs with plagiarized information from the internet. Most of these books contain inaccuracies that are easy to spot for real numismatists.

The books usually have less than 120 pages which indicates the desire to keep the page count low so they can optimize profits. Selling a book with 100 pages for $14.97, will generate approximately $6.95 in profit.

Some of these books manage to get into the top 100 bestselling books on Amazon in the category of "Antiques & Collectibles Encyclopedias."

You are not going to learn about error coins from people who think they know about coins or from people who post internet videos with no experience. Most of the internet videos are designed to get clicks and the coins they show are so rare, your chances of finding them is close to zero.

New collectors are often led down the wrong path with books sold on Amazon by people who built their book from eBay listings. One book reviewed contained many incorrect examples of coins not considered as an error or the incorrect error type.

It is troubling to see books promote cleaning coins and publishing ambiguous and incorrect information. New collectors deserve to get the best information possible about the hobby, so they do not make common mistakes.
