Au moment o la proprit et la royaut se trouvrent d'accord, celle-ci acquit une force irrsistible; elle ne vainquit pas seulement, elle conquit. L'glise avait besoin de la royaut. Ses prodigieuses richesses la mettaient en pril. Elle avait absorb la meilleure partie des terres; sans parler d'une foule de proprits et de revenus divers, des fondations pieuses, des dmes, etc., sur les cinquante-trois mille fiefs de chevaliers qui existaient en Angleterre, elle en possdait vingt-huit mille[2].
