Nul n'avait pntr dans l'infini dtail des dveloppements divers de son activit (religieuse, conomique, artistique, etc.). Nul ne l'avait encore embrasse du regard dans l'unit vivante des lments naturels et gographiques qui l'ont constitue. Le premier je la vis comme une me et une personne. L'illustre Sismondi, ce persvrant travailleur, honnte et judicieux, dans ses annales politiques, s'lve rarement aux vues d'ensemble. Et, d'autre part, il n'entre gure dans les recherches rudites. Lui-mme (p. ii) avoue loyalement qu'crivant Genve il n'avait sous la main ni les actes ni les manuscrits. Au reste, jusqu'en 1830 (mme jusqu'en 1836), aucun des historiens remarquables de cette poque n'avait senti encore le besoin de chercher les faits hors des livres imprims, aux sources primitives, la plupart indites alors, aux manuscrits de nos bibliothques, aux documents de nos archives. Cette noble plade historique qui, de 1820 1830, jette un si grand clat, MM. de Barante, Guizot, Mignet, Thiers, Augustin Thierry, envisagea l'histoire par des points de vue spciaux et divers. Tel fut proccup de l'lment de race, tel des institutions, etc., sans voir peut-tre assez combien ces choses s'isolent difficilement, combien chacune d'elles ragit sur les autres. La race, par exemple, reste-t-elle identique sans subir l'influence des murs changeantes? Les institutions peuvent-elles s'tudier suffisamment sans tenir compte de l'histoire des ides, de mille circonstances sociales dont elles surgissent?
