Jayne Mansfield, born Vera Jane Palmer, April 19, 1933, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, U.S., was a film, theatre, and TV actress, model, nightclub entertainer, singer, and Playboy Playmate. Jayne was a major Hollywood sex symbol during the 1950s to early 1960s, while under contract at 20th Century Fox. She was also famous for her well-publicized personal life and publicity stunts, including wardrobe malfunctions. Although Mansfield's movie career was short-lived, she had several box-office hits, having won a Theatre World Award and a Golden Globe. She was praised for her performances in the role of fictional actress Rita Marlowe, in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? both in the 1955-1956 Broadway version then the 1957 Hollywood film version. Jayne's other major movie performances were in The Girl Can't Help It (1956), The Wayward Bus (1957), and Too Hot to Handle (1960). In the sexploitation film, Promises! Promises! (1963), she became the first leading American actress to have a nude starring role in a Hollywood motion picture. Mansfield took her professional name from her first husband, public relations professional Paul Mansfield, being married and divorced 3 times, having 5 children. Jayne was allegedly intimately involved with many men, including Robert and John F. Kennedy, her attorney Samuel S. Brody, and Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli. She died in a car accident in Eastern New Orleans at the age of 34, on June 29th, 1967.
