A principios del siglo XVIII, el extenso territorio que hoy ocupa la Repblica norteamericana formaba tres distintas colonias: una espaola, otra francesa y otra inglesa. Esta ltima ocupaba un rea muy reducida en proporcin a las otras dos. No era ms que una faja de territorio que corra desde el ro Penobscot, en Maine, hasta el cabo Romano en la Carolina del Sur, y desde el Atlntico hasta la cordillera de los Alleghanies. Sin embargo, con el andar de los tiempos, la colonia inglesa primero, los Estados Unidos despus, uniendo la accin social a la poltica, lograron terminar con las dominaciones europeas y agregaron a su territorio el rea inmensa de sus colonias.
