En castellano carecemos de un modismo que reproduzca con exactitud aquella expresin. Lo ms aproximado, dentro de las locuciones acostumbradas que aluden a hechos cotidianos, sera nio mimado. Spoiled baby y enfant gat son frases que las dos quieren decir lo mismo; valen tanto como nio echado a perder. Aun suponiendo que nuestra expresin se corresponda en la realidad con las otras dos extranjeras, o sea, que todas tres designen el mismo fenmeno, es de advertir que nosotros, pecaminosamente especulativos all hacia la poca en que por ltimo se form nuestra habla, nos detuvimos a sealar la causa, el mimo, en tanto ingleses y franceses, ms prcticos, se conforman con indicar el efecto o resultado: la perdicin. Pero no designan las tres el mismo fenmeno, sino que entre la una y las otras dos hay notables diferencias. Nio mimado puede serlo un nio tonto y feo, porque el mimo sobrado viene de los progenitores, los cuales contadas veces reconocen tontera ni fealdad en los frutos de su amor. En el spoiled baby se presuponen ciertas cualidades anejas: rara hermosura o brillantez de inteligencia. El vino se echa a perder; no el vinagre.
