A corrective to conventional accounts of the reign of Queen Sancha and King Fernando I in medieval Iberia

Acclaimed historians Bernard F. Reilly and Simon R. Doubleday tell the story of the reign of Queen Sancha and King Fernando I, who together ruled the territories of Le?n and Galicia between 1038 and 1065--often regarded as a period in which Christian kings and their vassals asserted themselves more successfully in the face of external rivals, both Viking and Muslim. Bernard F. Reilly (1925-2021) was Professor Emeritus of History at Villanova University. He was the author of many books, including The Kingdom of León-Castilla Under King Alfonso VII, 1126-1157, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Simon R. Doubleday is Professor of History at Hofstra University. His most recent book is a biography of the Spanish ruler Alfonso X (1252-84), The Wise King: A Christian Prince, Muslim Spain, and the Birth of the Renaissance.
