Facts for the People of the Free States

The Abbeville (S. C.) Banner states, that two of Gov. McDuffies slaves were killed on Friday, Feb. 13th, by two other slaves, acting in the capacity of drivers! They were killed by what the law terms moderate correction! In June, 1846, the Baltimore Sun gave an account of a woman who jumped out of the window of the place in which her owner had confined her, and immediately took the nearest route to throw herself into the water. She was rescued. But, says the Sun, Upon being taken upon the deck of the vessel, she begged the by-standers to let her drown herself, stating, that she would 'sooner be dead, than go back again to be beaten as she had been! A correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer, July 25, 1846, wrote from Richmond, as follows:An unpleasant occurrence took place in this city yesterday. A man, who has a number of negroes in his employment, was proceeding, for a slight offence, to punish one of them by whipping, when the poor wretch, knowing his masters unmerciful nature, implored that he might be hung at once, instead of whipped. This of course would not answer, and on tying the negros hands behind him in the usual manner, the employer went into another room to procure a cowhide, when the negro, taking advantage of his masters absence, rushed from the room, jumped into the river, and was drowned. ......Buy Now (To Read More)
