Anni var sjuk. Hon slt under hela natten ej sina gon, utan klagade och vndades i sin vagga. Modren satt och vakade hos henne, vaggade och sjng. Allt emellan tog hon henne p sina armar och vyssade henne sakta; hon frskte bjuda henne brstet, frskte trycka henne mt till sig och lugna henne genom smekningar. Allt var frgfves. Barnet vred sig och gret stndigt. Munnen var het, den lilla kroppen brnde och andedrgten var flmtande. Och det fans ej ens ljus. Den lilla talgljusstumpen brann redan p aftonen slut; veken plumsade ned i pipan ock slocknade. Mari blef med sitt sjuka barn i det svarta mrkret. Ett par trar perlade fram i gonen, men hon torkade bort dem och frskte svlja ned den bittra frtviflan, som tillsnrde hennes strupe. Det blef ju i alla fall ej bttre af att grta, det visste hon af gammalt. Det lindrade visserligen fr en liten stund, men hvad gagnade det, d gonen i stllet brjade vrka. Natten var lng och syntes aldrig vilja taga slut. Rummet kndes kallt. Hon satt p sngkanten med en kort kjoltrasa omkring sig. De bara ftterna hngde ner, och hon frs om dem, men hon brydde sig ej om att stiga upp och ska strumporna, ty hon var van att slita vrre ondt och fste sig ej vid en sdan smsak.
